How to Get a Painting Estimate in Tacoma: A 2026–2027 Homeowner’s Guide

A good painting estimate in Tacoma should be free and written, based on an in-person walkthrough, and specific about the prep work, paint products, number of coats, timeline, warranty, and what’s not included.

The contractor behind it should also be registered with Washington L&I, insured, and EPA Lead-Safe certified if your home was built before 1978. If a quote is just one number on a business card, you can’t compare it with anything.

We’re Grit City Painters, a residential and commercial painting contractor serving Tacoma and Pierce and Kitsap counties. We’ve written estimates for thousands of homes, and we see homeowners compare quotes that look alike on the surface but describe very different jobs. This guide covers what a professional painting estimate should include, how to compare bids side by side, and when to book interior and exterior painting through 2026 and into 2027.

What Happens During a Professional Painting Estimate?

For interior painting, exterior painting, or cabinet painting, a real estimate starts with a visit to your home. Here’s how ours works:

  1. Walkthrough. We look at every room or surface you want painted and check the current condition: nail holes, cracks, water stains, peeling, old sheen, and trim and door details.
  2. Conversation. We ask how you use the space, your color ideas, your timeline, and what’s bugging you. That might be a scuffed stairwell, dated oak cabinets, or siding that’s faded on the south side.
  3. Measurements and prep notes. Square footage, ceiling heights, and the prep each area needs. Prep is where good and bad paint jobs split apart.
  4. Written scope and price. You get a clear, itemized estimate. No pressure and no “sign today” discount.

Most interior walkthroughs take under an hour. Exterior estimates take a little longer because we check siding, trim, and caulking all the way around the house.

What Should a Painting Estimate Include?

Use this as a checklist. A professional estimate from any painting contractor, us included, should clearly spell out:

  • Scope of work, room by room or surface by surface. Walls, ceilings, trim, doors, cabinets, siding, fascia, soffits: whatever’s included, listed out.
  • Surface prep. Patching, sanding, caulking, priming, drywall repair, and on exteriors, washing and scraping. If prep isn’t written down, assume it isn’t included.
  • Paint brand, product line, and sheen. “Premium paint” doesn’t tell you anything. The estimate should name the product. We use Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, and Rodda Paint.
  • Number of coats. One coat and two coats are different jobs at different prices.
  • Protection and cleanup. How floors, furniture, landscaping, and fixtures will be covered, and what the space looks like when the crew leaves each day.
  • Timeline. Start date, expected number of days, and how weather is handled for exterior work.
  • Warranty. What’s covered and for how long, in writing. Our exterior painting comes with a three-year warranty.
  • Exclusions. Anything not included, like moving heavy furniture, major carpentry, or wallpaper removal, so nothing surprises you later.
  • Licensing and insurance details. The contractor’s Washington registration number should appear on the estimate. Ours is #GRITCCP805C5.

How to Compare Painting Estimates Side by Side

If you’re comparing painters in Tacoma, put your bids into a simple table. Price differences usually come from scope differences, and a table makes those easy to spot.

Compare this What to look for
Prep described Specific steps (patch, sand, caulk, prime) vs. a vague “prep included”
Paint named Brand + product line + sheen vs. “quality paint”
Coats Stated number of coats per surface
Timeline A start date and duration you can plan around
Warranty Written terms and length
Registration & insurance WA L&I registration number you can look up
Lead-safe practices EPA RRP certification if your home is pre-1978
Communication Did they return calls, show up on time, and answer questions clearly?

If one bid is much lower than the others, look at the prep, product, and coat lines first. That’s usually where the gap comes from.

How Much Does Painting Cost in Tacoma?

Painting costs depend on the job, so a fair price for your home comes from the walkthrough. For interior painting, the biggest factors are square footage, ceiling height (vaulted ceilings and two-story entries need scaffolding or lifts), how much patching and repair the walls need, the number of color changes, and how much trim, doors, and cabinetry are involved. For exterior painting and other house painting services, the biggest factors are siding type and condition, the height of the home, how much scraping and caulking is needed, and access around landscaping.

That’s why we don’t quote over the phone. A free estimate gives you a number built on your home, not a guess.

Questions to Ask Painting Contractors Before You Hire

  • “Are you registered, bonded, and insured in Washington?” Any contractor can be looked up on the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries Verify a Contractor tool at lni.wa.gov.
  • “Is your firm EPA Lead-Safe certified?” Under the EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule, contractors who disturb paint in homes built before 1978 must be certified and follow lead-safe work practices. Many Tacoma neighborhoods, including the North End, Stadium District, Hilltop, and South Tacoma, are full of older homes, so this question matters here. Grit City Painters is EPA Lead-Safe certified.
  • “Who will actually be in my home?” Ask whether the crew is the company’s own team and who your point of contact is during the project.
  • “What does your warranty cover?” Get it in writing.
  • “Are you part of any professional associations?” Grit City Painters is an accredited member of the Painting Contractors Association (PCA), which holds member contractors to professional standards and ongoing training.

When Should You Get a Painting Estimate? (2026–2027 Timing)

Interior painting: book now for fall and winter. Interior work isn’t affected by weather, and a heated home stays well within the temperature range paint needs. Fall and winter usually have the most open scheduling for interior painting, cabinet painting, and drywall repair, which makes it a good time to get rooms done before the holidays or before spring gets busy. (More on that in our fall and winter booking post.)

Exterior painting: get your estimate this winter for spring and summer 2027. In the Pacific Northwest, exterior painting needs dry surfaces and mild temperatures, so the season runs roughly late spring through early fall. Those dry-season spots fill up fast. Homeowners who get their exterior estimate in winter can lock in a spot, pick colors early, and skip the spring scramble.

Selling or just moved in? Get an estimate as early as you can. Fresh interior paint is one of the simplest ways to update a home before a listing, and it’s much easier to paint an empty house before the furniture arrives.

Painting Estimate FAQ

Are painting estimates free? Yes. Grit City Painters offers free, no-pressure written estimates for interior painting, exterior painting, and cabinet painting throughout Tacoma and Pierce and Kitsap counties.

How long does a painting estimate take? Most interior walkthroughs take under an hour. Exterior estimates take a bit longer because we inspect the siding, trim, and caulking all the way around the home.

Can I get a painting estimate over the phone? We can talk through your project by phone, but an accurate price needs an in-person look at surface condition, prep needs, and square footage. That’s what keeps the estimate from changing once the work starts.

How many painting estimates should I get? Two or three detailed, written estimates is a good rule of thumb. Compare the scope, prep, paint products, and warranty, not just the total.

How far in advance should I book painters in Tacoma? For interior painting, fall and winter often have the most availability, so booking a few weeks out is common. For exterior painting, get your estimate in winter to reserve a spot in the spring and summer dry season.

Do you paint both interiors and exteriors? Yes. We handle interior painting, exterior painting, cabinet painting, drywall repair, and carpentry for residential and commercial properties.

How do I check if a painting contractor is licensed in Washington? Use the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries “Verify a Contractor” tool at lni.wa.gov. Search by business name or registration number to confirm registration, bond, and insurance status.
